FAQ: Clewer Cocktail Party – where does the name come from?
Q: What is Clewer, and why is it important to St Aidan’s?
A: On 9 December 1892, Sister Caroline Amy arrived in Brisbane to establish and begin the work of the Society of the Sacred Advent (SSA). She had come from Clewer in England, from the Community of St John the Baptist, and had answered a plea for assistance from the Vicar of St John’s Pro-Cathedral in Brisbane, the Reverend Stone-Wigg. Sister Caroline Amy’s dedication and faithfulness saw the community quickly grow and a strong ministry focusing on the needs of women and children was established.
Q: Why is a cocktail party named after Clewer?
A: The Clewer Cocktail Party is a way of honouring the origins of our school and acknowledging the remarkable Sister’s Carolyn Amy and Mother Emma who dedicated their lives to education and service. By naming the event after Clewer, we keep alive the connection to our founders and celebrate their enduring legacy.
Q: How does this history connect to our present community?
A: The spirit of Clewer continues to inspire St Aidan’s today. The cocktail party is both a celebration of our history and a joyful gathering for our community of for all alumni from 18 to 80. You don't have to wait for your reunion to come back and visit.
Q: Is the event just for history’s sake?
A: Not at all. While the name reflects our heritage, the event itself is about connection, friendship, and celebration. It’s an opportunity for all generations, past and present members of the St Aidan’s community to come together, enjoy each other’s company, and strengthen the bonds that make our school unique.
Q: Who is eligible to attend?
A: All of our past students, past staff and current staff who make up our wonderful community.
