A proud member of the Class of 1994, Carly has transformed a life shaped by significant health challenges into one defined by authenticity, courage, and artistic brilliance. Born with cystic fibrosis, she underwent a life-saving double-lung transplant at the age of 21. Years later, she confronted and overcame a rare cancer diagnosis. Rather than allowing these experiences to define her limitations, Carly has used them as fuel for connection and creativity.

Her acclaimed memoir, Breath — winner of the 2024 Queensland Literary Award for Book of the Year — is a moving, sharply honest reflection on mortality, survival, and the power of hope. Written with warmth, humour, and poetic clarity, Breath resonates deeply with readers navigating their own challenges.

Carly also breaks new ground as Queensland’s first non-affiliated hospital chaplain, offering emotional and spiritual care beyond traditional religious boundaries. She is a fierce advocate for organ donation and a leading voice for disability and chronic illness representation in the arts, using her platform to spark empathy and societal change.

Through her writing, advocacy, and service, Carly exemplifies the enduring values of compassion, creativity, and courage — hallmarks of the St Aidan’s spirit.

If you know an alumna making a meaningful impact in her field or community, nominate her for the 2026 Alumni Awards or share her story on Aidan’s Connect. Together, we celebrate those who inspire.
